Eric Billups, a 16-year-old honor roll student and dedicated football player at Hyde Park Academy, passed away following a tragic incident in Chicago.
Known affectionately as “KING,” Eric brought light, purpose, and determination to those around them, leaving a lasting impression on friends, family, and the wider community.
According to a fundraiser organized by Tiffany Stokes on April 18, 2026, Eric was on the way home when the heartbreaking event occurred near a bus stop outside a YMCA, close to the school.
Family members and loved ones remember Eric as a young person full of promise who “was truly a king in every sense” and “was doing everything right.”
The loss has deeply impacted the family, especially Eric’s parent, Rolanda Phoenix, as the community rallies in support during this difficult time.
One message shared online expressed, “Our hearts are shattered… this is every parent’s worst nightmare,” reflecting the overwhelming grief felt by many.
